One side of the needle is color-coded to distinguish between the picking point and the knitting point. You can recognize at a glance when the stitches have become twisted. The point of each end of the needle is different and can be applied according to preference; one end is round and color-coded, and the other is sharp.

The middle section of the needle is narrower and tapers from circle to square outwards from the middle. This is to prevent stitches from slipping off the ends of the needle.

Each end of the needle has flat surfaces so it will not roll off the work surface when not in use. The needle is small and straight enough to be held comfortably in one hand, so it does not need to be picked up each time it is required.
